Leeds Hockey Club
The Leeds Hockey Club is one of the largest clubs in West Yorkshire, with over 15 adult teams and a dedicated junior section. The club includes eight men’s teams, seven women’s teams, veterans’ squads, and mixed teams. Their top-tier teams compete in the National, North, and Yorkshire Leagues. The club’s home base is located at the University of Leeds’ Leeds Sports Park Weetwood, featuring state-of-the-art pitches of international standards.
Founded in 1934 as the Rawdon and District Hockey Club, the club reformed post-World War II and was renamed Horsforth HC. During the 1960s, it reached great success, with seven players representing West Yorkshire, including captain David Higham, who earned over 200 caps for the county and played for England.
The club underwent several transformations, adopting its final name, Leeds Hockey Club, after relocating to Horsforth School in the early 1970s. By then, the club had expanded to include six men’s teams and five women’s teams competing in Yorkshire and Northern leagues.
In 2006, the club moved to its modern facility at Sports Park Weetwood. Since 2014, Leeds Hockey Club has partnered with University of Leeds and Leeds Beckett University to enhance training and compete in higher leagues. In 2020, Leeds Hockey Club achieved charity status, further solidifying its community impact.
Leeds Adel Hockey Club
Leeds Adel Hockey Club is one of the oldest hockey clubs in Leeds, with its first mixed team game recorded in 1946. Shortly after, the Mens 1st XI team was formed, followed by a second men’s team in 1950. The club initially trained at Bedquilts, Ireland Wood, and Soldiers Field until they upgraded their facilities in 1962 to include top-quality grass pitches and changing rooms—rare luxuries at the time.
In 1970, the club merged with Fulneck Old Boys, leading to the formation of a third men’s team, followed by a fourth in the 1980s. Women’s teams also began thriving during this period.
A significant milestone came in 1996, when the club received grants totaling £237,700 from the Lottery Sports Fund and the Foundation for Sports and the Arts. This funding allowed the construction of a modern artificial turf pitch with state-of-the-art lighting. Players like Suzy Petty, who began her career at Leeds Adel, went on to represent England’s women’s hockey team.

Leeds Beckett Hockey Club
The Leeds Beckett University is not only one of Leeds’ premier educational institutions but also a hub for sports and athletics. The university boasts a rich sporting history, offering students exceptional facilities and training programs.
The Leeds Beckett Hockey Club includes eight teams, consisting of three men’s, four women’s, and one mixed team. Teams train one to two times weekly, with first squads practicing twice. Matches occur every Wednesday, followed by charity events organized by the club.
Players are supported with high-quality training programs, including free access to other sports sessions, physiotherapy, and nutrition plans. Injuries are treated at the Trackside Pavilion, a sports treatment center staffed by qualified medical professionals.
The club’s outstanding achievements include raising over £15,000 for charity, earning recognition at the Leeds Sports Awards for “Outstanding Contribution to Student Sport.”
Leeds Beckett University actively supports anti-doping initiatives in collaboration with the UK Anti-Doping Agency and WADA, ensuring fair and clean competition.
Leeds Knights
The Leeds Knights are one of the newest professional hockey clubs in the UK, quickly making a name for themselves since their formation in April 2021. Competing in the National Ice Hockey League (NIHL), the Leeds Knights play their home games at Planet Ice Leeds.
The team’s meteoric rise saw them crowned National Division champions in the 2022–2023 season. Led by captain Kieran Brown, a two-time top scorer in the NIHL National League, the Knights have consistently showcased exceptional talent and ambition.
